Grooming salon owners who also board or run daycare
MoeGo alternative for salons that also board
Not a takedown. MoeGo is good at grooming. This is for salons that grew a kennel out the back and now run two systems.

This is written for a specific person: you run a grooming salon, you started taking a few dogs overnight, and now there is a kennel out the back doing real money. Your grooming software handles half the business well and the other half not at all, so the boarding side lives in a notebook or a second subscription.
If you are looking for a MoeGo alternative for salons that also board, the question is not which product is better. It is whether you should be running one system or two.
What MoeGo is good at
Worth saying plainly, because most “alternatives” articles are written by whoever is selling the alternative.
MoeGo is built for grooming, and particularly for mobile grooming — the scheduling, the route side of a van operation, the client messaging that salons live on. If grooming is your whole business, a grooming-first product will beat a broader one, because every feature in it was designed for the thing you actually do.
Nothing below is an argument that it is a bad product. It is an argument about fit.
Where a grooming-only tool strains once you board
One visit becomes two records
A Golden Retriever comes in Friday for a six-night stay and has a bath on Thursday before going home. That is one visit for the customer and one dog in your building.
In a grooming-first system it is a grooming appointment; the stay lives somewhere else. So the dog exists twice, the owner’s phone number exists twice, and when the number changes, one of them is wrong. The first time this bites is when someone rings about a dog and the person who answers is looking at the wrong half of its history.
Runs are not appointment slots
Grooming schedules model people: a groomer, a start time, a duration. Boarding models space: a run, occupied continuously from Friday afternoon to Thursday morning, which cannot hold anything else in between.
You can fake a stay as a very long appointment. What you cannot fake is occupancy — the percentage that tells you whether to build, what to charge at Diwali, and when to stop taking bookings. That number is the whole reason boarding software exists, and it falls out of modelling runs as space.
One bill, or two
The customer who boarded for six nights and had a bath expects one invoice. Two systems produce two, and somebody adds them up by hand at the counter.
That is thirty seconds of arithmetic, done under pressure, several times a day, and it is where discounts get given by accident and line items get dropped.
The vaccination gate
Salons check vaccinations loosely. Kennels cannot: a dog sleeping in your building for six nights with lapsed boosters is a health risk to every other dog there, and an argument you will have at the gate rather than at the booking.
Boarding needs the due date attached to the pet and read at the moment a stay is booked, weeks before arrival.
Worked example. A Hyderabad salon with three groomers adds eight kennel runs. Grooming stays in the grooming product; boarding goes into a spreadsheet.
Within four months: two stays are double-entered for one run over a long weekend and resolved by putting a Beagle in the office; nobody can say what occupancy was in the first week of October; and a customer who boarded for nine nights and had two baths is invoiced ₹1,800 short because the second bath was on a different screen.
None of that is the grooming software failing. It is being asked to do a job it was not built for, next to a spreadsheet doing the rest.
A MoeGo alternative for salons that also board: two honest options
Keep two systems and accept the seam. Genuinely reasonable if boarding is small — four runs, a handful of stays a month. Run grooming where it works and keep the kennel in a notebook. Two tools with a clear boundary beat one tool used badly.
Move to something that models both. Worth it when boarding stops being a sideline: when you cannot state last month’s occupancy, when one customer regularly gets two bills, or when the same pet’s details have to be updated in two places.
If you go looking, the boarding-first products are a different family from the grooming-first ones — Gingr, for instance, comes at it from kennels and daycare rather than from salons. We keep honest pages on how we compare with Gingr and how we compare with MoeGo, including the parts where they do more than we do.
Where Fretso fits
Fretso was built for the multi-service case from the start: one pet file, with grooming tickets, kennel stays and clinical notes all hanging off it. The Retriever above is one record, one history, one invoice, whichever service it came in for.
Three things follow from that:
- Universal search. Name, phone number, microchip or booking reference finds the pet and everything it has ever had done, grooming and boarding together.
- Refusals in the database. Two dogs cannot occupy one run on one night, and two grooms cannot land on one groomer at once, because the rule sits where the data is written rather than on the booking screen.
- GST invoicing with gapless numbering, void-with-reason and credit notes — built for Indian tax rather than translated into it, and priced in rupees from ₹799 a month.
When to stay where you are
Stay with a grooming-first product if:
- Grooming is all you do, or boarding is four runs and occasional.
- You run mobile vans. Route optimisation is a real feature with real engineering behind it, and we do not have it.
- You are in the US or Europe and depend on local SMS pricing, payment processors and integrations built for that market.
And do not move for our sake if what you actually need is a till and stock control. We have no POS, no inventory and no pharmacy module. A pet shop with a counter and shelves needs a retail-first product; we say so on the pricing page rather than in a footnote after you have paid.
If you do switch, do it in this order
- Pets and owners first, deduplicated. This is the tedious part and the part that decides whether the move works.
- Boarding next, because it is the half currently in a spreadsheet and has the least to lose.
- Grooming last, in a quiet week, with the old system still readable for a month.
- Invoicing on a clean date — the first of a month or a quarter. Never mid-month, because invoice numbering has to stay sequential and you do not want two sources of numbers in one period.
There is a longer version of this in getting a pet business off spreadsheets, and it applies just as much when you are moving off two products as one.
Most salons that board do not need a better grooming product. They need the kennel to stop being a separate business that happens to share a building.

Questions people ask
Does MoeGo do boarding?
MoeGo is built around grooming, including mobile grooming, and that is what its scheduling is designed for. Check its current feature list directly for any boarding or lodging capability before assuming either way — the question to ask is not whether stays can be recorded, but whether kennel runs are modelled as bookable space with occupancy.
Is MoeGo available in India?
It is a US-built product priced in dollars. That means currency conversion on every renewal and an invoice format designed for US tax rather than GST. Before buying any foreign product from India, check that it can produce a GST invoice with gapless numbering and that it cannot delete an invoice outright.
What is the cheapest MoeGo alternative for a small salon?
For a single groomer, the cheapest real alternative is usually a paper diary and a phone. Among products, price varies by market: US grooming tools start in the tens of dollars a month, while Indian-billed products are generally cheaper in rupee terms. Compare the annual cost including per-staff charges, not the headline monthly price.
When should I stay with a grooming-only product?
If grooming is all you do, stay. A specialist tool will always beat a broader one on its home ground — mobile van routing, grooming-specific marketing and photo-heavy pet profiles are worth more to a pure salon than multi-service plumbing it will never use.
