Dog boarding software India: a buyer's checklist
Nine questions to ask any vendor, the four features that actually matter in a kennel, and an honest note on when not to buy anything.

Search for dog boarding software India and you get lists of ten products with a paragraph each, written by people who have never handed a Labrador back to the wrong owner’s brother-in-law. This is the other thing: a checklist you can hold a vendor to, and an honest section on when to buy nothing at all.
Work through it in order. The first four questions disqualify most products in ten minutes.
Dog boarding software India: the four questions that matter
1. Can it refuse an impossible booking?
One run holds one dog on one night. If the software lets you put two stays into the same run on overlapping dates — even by accident, even when two people are typing at once — it will happen to you on a Diwali Saturday.
Ask the vendor directly: what happens if two people book the same run for the same night at the same moment? A greyed-out slot on a screen is not an answer, because the screen is not where the booking is stored. You want to hear that the system refuses the second one.
2. Does it know occupancy, without anybody typing it in?
Occupancy is the number every real decision runs on: whether to build, what to charge at peak, when to stop taking bookings. If producing it is a separate monthly job, it will not get done.
The test is whether the check-in screen and the occupancy report read the same data. Ask to see last month’s occupancy in the demo account, then ask where that number came from.
3. Does it stop a dog with lapsed vaccinations at the booking, not the gate?
Every kennel has had this argument at the gate. The software’s job is to move it three weeks earlier, when the owner still has time to see a vet.
That means the pet’s record carries a next-due date, and the booking screen looks at it. A system that only stores a scanned certificate has not helped — nobody opens the file until the dog is in the van. The policy itself is yours to set; a vaccination policy for boarding kennels covers what to require and how to enforce it.
4. Can it produce an invoice your accountant accepts?
This is where foreign products quietly fail in India. A GST invoice has requirements: your GSTIN, the customer’s where applicable, the right HSN or SAC, the correct tax split, and numbering that is sequential with no gaps. You cannot delete a wrong invoice — you cancel or credit it, and the record of the original stays.
Ask: can I delete an invoice? If the answer is yes, the product was not built for Indian tax law. The detail is in GST billing for pet shops in India. [VERIFY: current GST rates, SAC codes for boarding services and the record retention period — these change, and your accountant is the authority.]
Five more, once a product survives the first four
5. Part-days and daycare. Boarding is nights; daycare is hours. If the product only understands nights, every daycare dog becomes a fudge.
6. Peak pricing. Can a night in Diwali week cost more than a night in February, without somebody editing each invoice by hand?
7. Deposits. For peak weeks especially. Can it take one, hold it, and apply it to the final bill?
8. What staff can see. A part-time kennel hand needs today’s arrivals and feed notes. They do not need last month’s takings. Ask whether roles are real permissions or just different menus.
9. Phone-first. Not “has an app”. Can the person cleaning run 9 mark a dog fed, on a phone, with wet hands, in one tap? Most kennel work happens away from a desk.
What it should cost, and how to compare honestly
Compare annual cost in rupees, all in.
Indian-billed products generally sit in the hundreds to low thousands of rupees a month. Software built for the US kennel market is typically priced in dollars from roughly $50 a month upwards, which converts to several times the Indian figure and adds a currency conversion to every renewal — plus, often, per-staff pricing that grows as you hire. [VERIFY: check each vendor's current published pricing; these move.]
Worked example. A 14-run kennel near Coimbatore at 55% occupancy sells about 2,800 run-nights a year at ₹950 — roughly ₹26.6 lakh of boarding revenue.
A system at ₹1,299 a month is ₹15,588 a year: 0.6% of revenue, or about 16 run-nights. A dollar-priced product at $79 a month is roughly ₹83,000 a year at current rates — still under 4%, but now a real line item, and one that moves with the exchange rate.
Either is affordable if it prevents one disputed invoice a month and one lost peak-week booking a year. Neither is worth anything if nobody at the kennel opens it.
That last sentence is the whole decision. The cheapest product you will actually use beats the best one you will not.
Our own pricing is on the pricing page and starts at ₹799 a month, billed in rupees, with GST handled rather than bolted on.
Where Fretso fits, and where it does not
Fretso is built for a business that does more than one thing to the same dog. The kennel board, the grooming queue and the vet’s notes hang off one pet file, so a dog that boards for a week, gets a bath before going home and has its vaccination updated is one record and one bill — not three systems and three invoices.
It refuses double-booked runs at the database level, gates bookings on vaccination due dates, and issues GST invoices with gapless numbering, void-with-reason and credit notes.
Now the limits, because a checklist that only flatters the author is not a checklist:
- No POS and no stock control. If you sell food and accessories over a counter and need inventory, batch expiry and a till, Fretso does not do it and is not about to. Pair it with something that does, or buy a retail-first product.
- No pharmacy module. Clinical notes and vaccination records, yes. Drug inventory and dispensing, no.
- Grooming-only salons in the US and Europe are better served by products built for that market — they have route optimisation for mobile vans, local SMS pricing and integrations we do not have. If you groom only, and you are not in India, look at MoeGo or Gingr first. We keep comparison pages that say the same thing in more detail.
When to buy nothing
If you have six runs, one person and a notebook that works, keep the notebook. Software solves a coordination problem — the same fact needed in two places by two people — and if you do not have that problem, you are buying overhead.
The signals that you do have it:
- Two people take bookings, on two channels.
- You cannot state last month’s occupancy without adding up a day-book.
- Invoices are written from memory at the end of a stay.
- Somebody checks the vaccination folder at the gate rather than at the booking.
Two of those and a system will pay for itself. None of them and it will not.
Before you sign anything
Ask for a trial with your own data, not a demo with theirs. Put in ten real stays across a busy weekend, deliberately try to double-book a run, issue an invoice and then try to change it. Twenty minutes of that tells you more than a forty-minute sales call.
Want to try that with your own kennel’s numbers? Book a twenty-minute demo and bring a busy weekend with you.
Questions people ask
What does dog boarding software cost in India?
Indian-billed products generally sit in the hundreds to low thousands of rupees a month per business; US-built kennel software is usually priced in dollars from around $50 a month upwards, which lands several times higher once converted and carries currency conversion on every renewal. Compare the annual figure in rupees, including any per-staff charges, rather than the headline monthly price.
Does boarding software handle GST invoices?
Some do and many foreign products do not. A GST invoice needs your GSTIN, the customer's where applicable, HSN or SAC for the service, the correct tax split and gapless sequential numbering. If the product cannot number invoices without gaps or cannot issue a credit note, you will end up keeping a second set of books.
Can one system handle boarding and grooming together?
Some can, most are built for one. It matters if the same dog is groomed before going home from a stay — in a single-service product that is two bookings, two records and two invoices for one visit. If you only board, a boarding-only product is simpler and usually cheaper.
Do I need software for a six-run kennel?
Probably not. One person, six runs and a notebook works, and software will slow you down. The case for a system starts when the same fact has to be written in more than one place, or when more than one person takes bookings.
